How to convert a RadioShack soldering iron to a fine tip soldering iron 5 September 2006, 03:53
Posted by Orhan in : Geeky Techy Stuff , trackbackI needed to perform a repair procedure on a Dell Inspiron 5150 to fix the “Power cuttoff, shutdown, crash when laptop is moved or tilted…” problem, as described at http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/43678/
All I needed was a sodlering iron with an extremely fine tip to be able to resolder a 14 leg surface mount integrated circuit on the motherboard.
All I had was a RadioShack 5-Piece soldering tool set PN 64-2802B.
Here is how to convert the RS soldering tool to a fine tip:
1-Find a steel paper clip
2-Cut it to approx. 1″ length
3-Bend one end to a U shape. This end will go into the soldering irons soldering tip holder.
4-Remove the existing tip by unscewing. Slide the paper clips bent end firmly, and secure by tightning the side screw.
5-You are done! Just wait long enough till the iron heats up, and carefully solder those fine legs without exerting too much force or the paper clip will bend.

Tried it… It doesn’t seem to be getting hot enough.
